With the recent Google Panda Update now in full swing the theme that Google seems to continuing with is that only unique content counts. This is a good thing because it has pushed down the websites that were ranking highly for scraped content and it has opened up the web now for users supplying new, fresh and unique content.
There are however downsides to this, websites such as eHow have seen massive traffic drops due to the Panda update as much of the content purveyed is second hand but some of these websites that use second hand information actually display the content better giving users a much better experience over the original site.
So what can you do to make sure your content is unique?
Make sure that firstly you have a blog integrated into your website (not external, WordPress would be a great option here). Then be sure to only add content that has not been added anywhere else, the easiest way to ensure this is to write it from scratch yourself.
Don't spin
Article spinning (taking an already published article and just changing a few bits) is a big no no, the reasons for this is because Google can tell if an article has been re-spun and so can article directory sites that you want to add to. Spinning an article will be of no benefit to you at all.
Regularly add to your blog
The worst thing you can do is set up a blog on your website and not update it. Most blog platforms show dates of when the content was published, so if you last added to your blog 3 years ago search engines and users are not going to see you as an authoritative figure so this will only cause harm to your website.
Take your time over your content writing
One of the big things to come out of the Panda update was that it isn't just about having lots and lots of content, it is about having high quality unique content that users want to read and interact with. You must take your time over content and make sure that it is high quality, this will help you in 3 ways:
1) Google wants unique content and will rank you accordingly.
2) Users will come to your website to read your content - Increased traffic.
3) You want users to comment on your content so by ensuring it is high quality you will ensure that readers will get involved.
In the grand scheme of things it is important that the web is as fresh as possible giving users the best possible search results, this is all Google is trying to achieve.
