What is SEO and Why is it Important?
So just what do people mean when they talk about SEO? Is it really important or we just trying to bamboozle you with technical terms?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It's all about getting more visitors to a website by making it more "search engine friendly". If you want to get as many visitors to your website as possible then SEO really is important.
When you click the search button on any popular search engine (Google, Bing, Ask etc) the search results appear pretty quickly. This might look like magic but have you ever thought about what really goes on behind the scenes?
Google has to make an instant decision about which websites should be shown on its search results pages and in which order they appear. It does this by considering a number of factors, such as how many times the search term appears on a website, how popular and trusted the website is, and other more complicated factors.
Where your website appears on a list of Google search results can have a huge impact on the number of visitors you receive. It's thought that around 40% of people will click on the website that Google places at the top of the list, while just over 20% will click on the website in second place. By comparison, the websites that appear on Google's second page of results will each only receive 10% of these visitors. If you are listed below the third page of results you can expect to be visited by around 1% of these people or less.
Getting your website to appear at the top of a popular Google (or any other search engine for that matter) really isn't easy and to get there you will probably have to use SEO practices, but the effort will clearly be worthwhile.
How Does Search Optimization Work?
Search optimization is all about understanding how search engines work and altering your website accordingly.
One of the most important things to consider is the number of incoming links to your site. Google looks at how many other websites have linked to yours and uses this to determine how popular your website is. A large number of incoming links from popular websites will do wonders for your Google rank.
Another important aspect of search engine optimization is the use of keywords. Keywords are words and phrases that a web developer or website owner deliberately uses in order to attract the attention of search engines.
For example, if you were to use the phrase "designer handbag" many times on your site, you would find yourself moving up Google's list of results for the search term "designer handbag". Of course, the keywords you choose to target should be relevant to your website and to the visitors you hope to attract.
Other search engine optimization techniques include looking at the way your website is constructed, and the use of social media, article directory sites and meta tags. This can all get pretty complicated and, it's fair to say, confusing. That's why for anything other than basic SEO we recommend hiring an SEO expert or a web designer with in-depth knowledge of how search engine optimization works.
