Keyword Density - Necessity Or A Myth?

Nowadays, many SEO writers are troubled by keyword density requirements, imposed by optimization standards that have, for unknown reasons, been carved in stone and adopted by vast majority of publishers. Still, there are far more evidences supporting the fact that keyword density does not play a major role, if any, in search engines' algorithms that determine the position of websites in search results.

If you have not been introduced to this term yet, keyword density pertains to the number of times that certain phrase is being repeated in the total number of words of a measured text, expressed in percentiles. Example of this would be if you have written a 400 words article, where you have used your chosen keyword 10 times. Then the keyword density of your article would be 2,5% (10/400 x 100).

Many SEO 'experts' are favoring the theory that ideal key-phrase density is between 2 and 3% and you would be surprised if you knew how deep roots this theory has grew. The popularity of 'keyword density' theory and practices is largely due to their quantifiable quality and easiness of grasping. Once they adopted such a convenient way to measure what search engines supposedly use in their algorithms, SEO publishers find it hard to let go of this myth.

This practice, however, can do more harm than good, especially if you are stuffing your articles with keywords. You can easily be registered as a spammer and suffer penalties. This happens when people put too much emphasis on the density of their keywords, instead to worry about readability, flow and conveying the message to the readers. Most readers will be repelled by high key-phrase density articles and will simply navigate away from your site in search for resources that will be pleasurable to read. In addition, if you try to target more than one keyword per text and apply the density theory, you will get a poor and stuffed article. Try to limit secondary keywords that appear on your page to supplementary ones and synonyms.

Therefore, do not let your SEO backfire on you and use keyword frequency as your guidance measure instead of density. Checking the relative frequency of your main keywords will help you see how they stand among other frequently repeated words in your text. In addition, you shouldn't worry if your main keyword is not the most frequent word in your text. It suffices that it is there. You can check the frequency of your keywords with the cloud generator tools, freely available online.
